First it was the smoke and fires keeping people at home, now it’s social distancing and self isolation. 2020 has been hard on everyone and local Canberra businesses have had it particularly rough.
But just because you can’t catch up with mates for coffee at your favourite cafe, or have a few after work drinks at the local, you can still support your favourite local businesses and maintain social distancing.
Here’s 5 ways you can show your support:
1. GRAB A TAKEAWAY
Most cafes have been offering takeaway for a while, but now restaurants and bars are doing the same thing (some also delivering). Most places are updating their social media with new info on takeaway menus so log on and check it out.
2. ORDER ONLINE
We live in a digital world and many local businesses have quickly adapted and are now offering delivery options. Fancy a beer, get it delivered. Need coffee beans, get them delivered. I’d be surprised if there’s anything you need that can’t be delivered to your door.
3. ONLINE PERSONAL TRAINING
You can continue to support your personal trainer by paying for online training sessions. Many PTs are running sessions via Zoom or FaceTime while others are uploading videos and programs to their website.
4. BUY A GIFT VOUCHER OR BOOK SOMETHING IN ADVANCED
It’s all good ordering a takeaway meal here and there, but many locally owned shops are finding it hard too. You might not need a t-shirt or bike service right now, but you can show support to local stores by buying a voucher to redeem later or book a staycation if you need a change of scenery.
5. SOCIAL MEDIA
While the first four ways to support local businesses will cost you money, you can also show your support without spending a cent. Become more active on social media and share posts from local businesses to help spread their reach. Liking a post will help them a little, but adding comments, tagging mates and sharing posts will go even further. You could also tag them in your own posts for extra goodwill.
Times are tough right now, but let’s pull together and help local businesses survive and thrive. Remember where possible order direct through the vendor so all profits go direct to them e.g call the restaurant direct to order rather than opening your Uber or Deliveroo app.
