SPECIALIZED TURBO LEVO SL

Updated: Mar 30

Canberra has to be one of the best cities in Australia for bike lovers. With multiple trail options and endless bike paths, there’s plenty of options to keep you riding something new every day of the week.

I like riding all kinds of bikes, road bikes, mountain bikes, even my wife’s cyclocross; but until yesterday, I’d never ridden an e-bike. I’d always thought they were for people who didn’t ride bikes very often, people who didn’t have the fitness to ride, people that didn’t understand the pure joy and freedom of cycling under your own steam. But as e-bikes are becoming more popular, and more advanced, I’m beginning to realise that perhaps e-bikes have a place in everybody’s bike shed and that maybe they offer something that other bikes don’t deliver.

Thanks to Lonsdale Street Cyclery, in Braddon, I was given the chance to test out the latest e-mtb from Specialized. Named the Turbo Levo SL, this e-mtb is about as close to a true mountain bike as e-bikes have ever come. Weighing in at just over 17kg, and boasting 150mm travel front and back, this is the ideal trail bike for Canberra.

I don’t want to get too technical here, but to put it simply, the Turbo Levo’s 240watt motor can effectively double your power. Which means that whatever effort you’re putting into your pedalling, you’ll see double the results. While the boost of power feels pretty strange at first, the satisfaction of flying up the climbs much more effortlessly than usual will soon have you grinning from ear to ear.

I spent a couple of hours riding around Majura Pines, and while I’m certainly not riding the Levo SL to its full potential, I can attest to the fact that it’ll bring a new lease of life to your riding. The extra boost from the motor may not climb the hills for you, but it gives you just enough help to bring you to the top, so you can enjoy descent after descent, after descent.

Bikes are all about having fun, and the Levo SL delivers fun by the bucket load.

If you want to find out more about the Specialized Turbo Levo SL, or the other e-bikes available, I can definitely recommend heading into Lonsdale Street Cyclery and speaking to the team.
