WALLABIES FIRST SPRING WIN

After going down to Wales last week, the Wallabies have downed Italy 26-7 over the weekend for their first win on the spring tour. Italy actually started off the game strongly after they had two tries disallowed, the second however did seem like a harsh call. The Wallabies were able to turn things around and post first points through Marika Koroibete, after some brilliant work from Samu Kerevi and David Pocock. Koroibete would the cross for his second 6 minutes later after he and fellow winger Adam Ashley-Cooper combined to give Australia a 14-0 lead, a lead that they would take into half time. The Wallabies started the second half well after Taniela Tupou scored after running through a coupe of Italian defenders to extend the Wallabies lead to 26 points. Two minutes after the Wallabies scored, Italian Winger Mattia Bellini swooped on a loose ball running 50 metres to finally get the home side on the board. Wallabies scrum half Will Genia scored the final try of the match two minutes giving the Wallabies a much needed win heading into their next match against England.

CAPITALS DOWN THE RANGERS

After going down in a top of the table clash against Perth last week, the UC Capitals have gotten back to their winning ways with a 77- 65 win over the Dandenong Rangers. The Rangers kept up with the Capitals for most of the first quarter, only being down by 3 points with two minutes left to play before the Capitals scored six points to taking a 24-17 lead into the first break. The Capitals stared the second quarter strongly, Kelsey Griffin again being the in the thick of things as they went into half time with a commanding the 49-31 lead. The third quarter saw both teams score 17 points apiece, however due to the Capitals strong second quarter they were up 66-48 at three quarter time. In the end, the lead that Capitals had gotten out was too much fro the Rangers to overcome as they lost by 12 points end, the Capitals Kelsey Griffin (25pts, 8 reb) Kia Nurse (18pts, 5reb) and Lauren Scherf (14pts, 8 reb) were the stars. The win now sees the Capitals back in second place on the ladder.

NEWCASTLE HAND CANBERRA UNITED FIRST LOSS

Canberra United have lost their first match of the season, going down 1-0 to the Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium at the weekend, the Newcastle outfit’s first against United. With Rachel Corsie and Refiloe Jane away on rep duties, United had a chance to score first through Nicki Flannery but the shot was wide, while Denise O’Sullivan had a shot stopped as well. Cortnee Vine scored for the home side just before half time with a magnificent strike that got past keeper Sham Khamis. The Jets almost went 2-0 up in the second half through Hannah Brewer, however United’s Nikola Orgill’s tackle on Brewer stopped that attempt. United had their chances to draw level, however it wasn’t to be as the Jets held on for the win.

SANTIAGO PONZINIBBIO KO’S NEIL MAGNY

The UFC’s inaugural trip to Argentina saw Argentinian fighter Santiago Ponzinibbio knock out Neil Magny in the main event at the weekend. Ponzinibbio was dominated throughout the fight, peppering Magny with leg kicks that almost ended the fight. The end came in the fourth round when Ponzinibbio landed a right hand which caught Magny and put him to sleep; Ponzinibbio received a $50,000 performance bonus for the win.
